Body/mind connections

“The mind and body are not separate, what affects one, affects the other”

Many things can disrupt your peaceful life and cause you stress. Lately, it`s been the pandemic, you might have been furloughed, felt lonely in self-isolation or stressed about home-schooling. But we do not need a pandemic to disrupt our mental health. It can be life events such as divorce, difficulties with raising children, suffering from an illness or an injury, having a challenging job, or not liking your job, moving house, having, not having or adopting a baby and many more situations that can adversely affect your emotional health. These emotions then feed into intense feelings of sadness, stress or anxiety. Even good changes increase stress levels such as getting married.

Your body responds to your thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviour. Your body and mind are connected, emotions can cause physiological reactions in your body, and psychological issues can stop your body functioning properly. If you want to read more about the effect of thoughts on the body, I can recommend you to read It’s All in Your Head by Suzanne O`Sullivan.

Don`t worry, you can improve your emotional health. We have to really understand our emotions to manage them. Following are some other helpful tips.

You have to find ways to express those feelings, talk about them in a supportive environment. Keeping these feelings inside make you feel worse. It’s okay to talk about your difficulties, it`s okay to feel low, it`s okay to ask for help.

Your family may not always be able to help you, sometimes you need to ask for professional support.

What can you do to feel better?

  • Find someone who can support you, it can be a family member, a friend or a professional.
  • Use a diary of gratefulness.
  • Try to find something that takes your mind off things, like an old hobby that you haven`t practised for a while.
  • Keep active.
  • Eat healthily.
  • Practise calming your mind and body. Hypnotherapy can teach you how to calm both your mind and body and create peacefulness when feeling anxious or stressed.
  • Get enough sleep and ask for help if you have trouble with sleeping.
  • Do not use drugs or alcohol.
  • Limit your caffeine intake.

Don`t forget, that our mind (thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviour) and body are connected; we can start working on any of these elements, and they will have a positive effect on each other.
