Practising gratitude can improve your life

Having a glass half empty contributes to lower mood, worse mental health and lack of motivation.

Comparison dominates our lives. Focusing on what you may miss in your life or what others seem to have will put you in a bitter, sad place. As you keep focusing on the negatives, you keep looking for validation about you being right. It is a downward spiral from there.

However, you don’t have to be stuck in that spiral.

A half-full glass promotes better health and well-being at all levels.

Practising gratitude will help you to see things more positively.

A positive mindset will help you feel more fulfilled. It rewires your brain by changing its chemistry. When positive thoughts enter your mind, your brain releases “feelgood” chemicals, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine—the neurotransmitters responsible for your emotions. This makes you feel good, happier, more satisfied, and less anxious.

Just ten weeks of gratitude journalling will help you make the necessary changes.

Therapy can help you take the initial steps to find your grateful side. It will also help you notice joy in the minor interactions and tiny moments.

Being present and mindful is part of the process. It is about recognising that each day has good moments, even the sad, unhappy, or stressful ones.
